On 3 November 2009, the Women for Women International London Junior Leadership Circle hosted PLAY: a Festival of Fun with Paradise Row & Prakke Contemporary in Mayfair. PLAY is a pop-up art show which examines the notion of “play” and features the works of well-known contemporary artistis including the Chapman Brothers, Sol LEwitt and Carsten Holler. By the end of the evening, the Women for Women International London JLC hit and surpassed its 2009 fundraising target, raising £3,380 to support women survivors of war.

Thanks to Paradise Row & Prakke Contemporary for sponsoring the event, the staff at WfWI for their hard work and administrative support and the following JLC members for organising the event: Julie Grossman, Mafalda Trabuco, and Phan Tu.

For more information about this event, please contact Philippa at PSellers@womenforwomen.org.

“Protecting displaced Africans: Selective rescue”

The most recent “Economist” magazine has an interesting article about a treaty recently signed to assist Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), many of whom are women living in Africa (eg. Congo, Somalia, Uganda and Kenya).

Rwanda Refugee Massacre in the Congo

Linda Melvern’s talk to the London JLC was a timely one; unfortunately, fifteen years after the civil war, Rwandans are still suffering from acts of genocide. The NY Times reported that dozens of Rwandan women were raped in April ‘09 by former Congolese Tutsi rebels.

WfWI on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”

Women for Women International was recently featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Within 24 hours, the organisation received 5,062 sponsorships and $33K+ in online donations – and the numbers keep growing.  To provide some context:

  • On average, we received 17 new sponsorships/day in September
  • On average, we received 476 new sponsorships/month this year

Other indicators of success:

  • Women for Women International was the #1 search term on Google the day the show aired
  • We received 27 emails yesterday from grassroots supporters interested in hosting events or starting their own Run for Congo – we normally receive 3-4/day
  • 86% of the visitors to our website yesterday were new – as of 7:30 pm that night, we had 17,000 visitors, up from 1,400 on a typical day

Uganda-Rwanda Connection

At Linda Melvern’s talk about her coverage of the Rwanda civil war, she suggested that the surge of violence against women in Uganda is a result of the “contagion” that is rape which was used as a weapon of war during the 1993 mass genocide. “The Washington Post” reported that a “key Rwanda genocide suspect” was arrested today in Uganda.
